Welcome new and returning families to the 2019-2020 school year!
SALUTATIONS: My name is Ms. Hermanny, I am glad to be returning for my fifteenth year at Nate Mack as the art specialist. This welcome letter will encompass my rules in the art room, consequences, rewards, grades, fundraisers, reminders, and contact info.
CURRICULUM: I will be incorporating aesthetics (the philosophy of art), criticism, (the interpretation of meaning), art history, (the context of time and culture) and art production in the curriculum; standards are based on age appropriate skills. Art can be the bridge between language arts, science, social studies, math, and a number of real world applications.
Art facilitates 21st century learning by fostering collaboration, creativity, and diversity while using higher level thinking skills, strengthening dexterity, hand eye coordination, vocabulary, perception, concentration, cooperation, social and life skills, while completing hands on projects.
Art Education is best when incorporating a variety of mediums, I plan to include, drawing, painting, collage, fiber/textile, and clay with a multicultural emphasis. This year Native American Culture will be our emphasis. An Artsmart game, during line up, self reflections, extra time, with options for educational manipulatives and crafts, are dependent on behavior and time allowance.
GRADES: The rubric used for large projects focus on the 4 C’s: Correct, Complete, Craftsmanship, and Creativity. Each project will be given a summative grade for “the product” portion worth 80%, and formative grades worth 20% for “the process”, which usually includes multiple standards applicable to the project. (E =100, S+= 90, S=80, S-=70, N=65).
Because projects can take multiple weeks to complete and there are less overall “scores to average”, EVERY project is important, and weighs heavily. Any student with missing work, or who may be unsatisfied with their grade, is encouraged to see me for an opportunity to finish/or re-do a project for a better grade- grades can be changed anytime before the end of the grading semester.
There is also opportunity before school, (I arrive at 7:30), and after school (please arrange a day/ time that works for me and the student/s). I do not send work home until the end of the school year, (for the art show), and incase there is a discrepancy with a grade.
RULES & CONSEQUENCES:
A= Act Kindly, follow the golden rule
R= Respect Yourself and Others, & the art room
T= Take Responsibility for your work and your actions
Citations have been given for chronic disruptions, damage of art/ school property, inappropriate language/ inappropriate gestures, violation of no touch policy, and hurtful behavior. Office referrals are used for serious behavior incidents like stealing, fighting, threatening, bullying, and vandalism.
I will be using behavior management strategies that redirect, and focus on individual and group cooperation. Teams will earn positive and negative points when appropriate. Individuals earn “strikes” for not following class/school rules. Students who are in need of “extra practice” may be asked to come into the art room during their lunch recess, if not possible, students may need to meet at a later time to discuss target behaviors and solutions for the future. Parent feedback/suggestions and communication are always welcome.
Documentation will be ongoing, teacher communication, parent phone calls/ citations will be necessary if behavior doesn’t improve. Rewards include Stamps, Mack Money, Skittles, Bally Chair, Team Pts., Extra time, and Class Mack Check.
BEHAVIOR CHECKS/ TEAM POINTS:
$1 Enter mindfully
$1 Thoughtful listening/participation
$1 Focused and productive
$1 Responsible clean up
$1 Respectful Line up and exit
DONATIONS: In art we use a lot of wipes, tissues, white board markers, black sharpie markers, wet erase markers and copy paper, any donations lighten the amount of fundraising I need to do to replenish everyday supplies! If you ever have fabric, yarn, buttons, craft supplies, (even if not enough for a grade level project), they can be utilized by kids during extra time. For lack of storage, please send recyclables to Rm. 38 (GATE) Mrs. Giunta.
VOLUNTEERS: Are always welcome as an extra set of hands in class, sharpening pencils, making copies, laminating, cutting paper, putting up/ taking down work on bulletin boards, helping to take pictures of art and volunteering during STEAM club, hanging work for the art show, just to name a few. If you’re interested, please email me.
FUNDRAISERS: Thank you in advance for supporting the program!
The .25/.50 sticker machine is located just inside the MP room. This money, even in small quantities, adds up to cover the 5th grade Legacy tile mural I install at the end of the year! Stay tuned for McSpecialists Night, Turkey Trot, and Specialists Night out- Fundraising supplies ALL the materials we use in art; pencils, clay, paint, paper, everything. If I accumulate a surplus of fundraising $ My wish is for aprons, new stools & art tables!
REMINDERS: Please do not bring distractibles/toys, wear appropriate art clothing, use the bathroom before coming to art, (it is allowed but discouraged.) Students are permitted a water bottle as long as it does not interfere during class. Anything that is confiscated will be given to their classroom teacher. Anything forgotten/lost will be turned into Lost and Found.
